Book an interactive WORKSHOP

Not sure what sustainability actually means or ready to take it further?

Sustainability can get complicated quickly. These workshops make it easier to see the bigger picture, connect the dots and turn complex ideas into something you can actually work with.

Drawing on over 10 years of experience across environmental and sustainability engineering, circular economy and systems thinking, I bring together research, real-world examples and different disciplinary perspectives — without drowning you in theory.

Choose from introductory to advanced workshops, or tailor a session around your organisation, sector or challenge.

Learning by doing

I believe people understand complex ideas better when they can explore, question and experience them, rather than simply being told about them.

My workshops draw on experiential learning and my teaching experience across technical and business disciplines. We move from hearing and seeing → discussing and experiencing → applying ideas to real challenges.

Expect visual thinking, hands-on activities, discussion, familiar examples and space to challenge assumptions. The aim is not to make sustainability simplistic, but to make its complexity accessible, memorable and useful.

And most importantly: the learning shouldn't end when the workshop does. Participants can take the questions, tools and ways of thinking back into their own work.

What the Hell Is Even Sustainability?

What actually makes something sustainable?

This interactive introduction is designed for people who don't need another list of definitions, acronyms and sustainability targets. It’s sustainability beyond the buzzwords.

Through activities, familiar examples and systems thinking, we explore how environmental, social and economic issues connect; why apparently sustainable solutions sometimes create unexpected consequences; who benefits and who carries the costs; and what changes when we zoom out beyond the immediate problem.

Depending on the audience, the workshop can explore topics including climate change, resources, global supply chains, circular economy, consumption, justice, the informal economy, the SDGs, planetary boundaries and weak versus strong sustainability. It includes examples of products and solutions from our daily life. No abstract theory, but hands-on experiences.

Good for: teams beginning their sustainability journey, mixed-knowledge groups, professional development and organisations wanting a shared understanding before deciding what to do next.

You will leave with: a bigger-picture understanding of sustainability, practical questions for interrogating sustainability claims and a digital toolkit for continuing the conversation.

ZOOM OUT: Systems thinking for sustainability decisions

Before solving the problem, can you see the system creating it?

A solar panel reduces fossil-fuel dependence—but requires materials, land, infrastructure and global supply chains. A recycled product keeps materials in circulation—but what happens to consumption? A highly efficient technology might reduce impacts per unit while increasing overall demand.

Sustainability decisions rarely produce only one consequence.

ZOOM OUT introduces practical systems thinking without requiring participants to become systems scientists.

Working through familiar examples or challenges from their own organisation, participants explore dependencies, stakeholders, feedbacks, scale, unintended consequences, burden shifting and leverage points.

Then we zoom back in:

Knowing what we know now, would we make the same decision differently?

Good for: sustainability and innovation teams, managers, multidisciplinary groups and anyone dealing with complex decisions where there isn't one obviously correct answer.

You will leave with: a reusable method for zooming out before making sustainability decisions and a set of systems-thinking prompts that can be applied to future projects.

Take-home materials can include AI prompts designed to challenge sustainability thinking, helping users uncover assumptions, expand system boundaries, consider overlooked stakeholders and identify questions requiring further evidence rather than simply asking AI for “the sustainable” answer.

Bring Your Own Sustainability Challenge

A facilitated session built around your organisation

Sometimes you don't need another sustainability workshop. You need space to understand a problem properly.

Bring a real question, decision, project or sustainability challenge and I will design a facilitated session around it.

Depending on the challenge, we might use systems mapping, stakeholder perspectives, sustainability boundaries, leverage points, Strong Sustainability or other participatory methods to uncover connections that are difficult to see when different parts of an organisation are looking at the problem separately.

The aim isn't for me to arrive with a predetermined answer. It is to help your team make its knowledge visible, challenge assumptions, identify what might be missing and develop possible pathways forward.

Sessions can include a follow-up visual summary, key questions and practical take-home resources.

Strong Sustainability

Designing for people, nature and lasting prosperity

What changes when nature isn't simply another thing we can trade away?

Strong Sustainability challenges one of the assumptions underlying many conventional approaches to sustainability: that losses in nature or social wellbeing can always be compensated for by economic or technological gains.

Instead, we explore businesses and economies as systems that depend upon functioning societies and ecological systems.

Through interactive activities and real-world examples, participants investigate ecological limits, regeneration, justice, value creation, trade-offs and the relationships between nature, people and economic viability.

The objective isn't to discover the perfect sustainable business. It is to ask better questions about what we are trying to sustain, what should not be compromised and what flourishing could look like.

Good for: sustainability professionals, leadership teams, researchers and organisations ready to move beyond incremental sustainability.

You will leave with: a practical introduction to Strong Sustainability and tools for applying this perspective to organisational decisions.

Circular Economy: Beyond Recycling

Circular economy is about much more than recycling.

This workshop explores what happens when we rethink the way resources and value move through our organisations and economies.

Participants investigate circular strategies from extending product lifetimes and retaining value to reuse, repair, sharing and services, alternative business models and reducing resource demand. But we also examine the difficult questions: Can something be circular without being sustainable? What happens when efficiency increases consumption? Where might environmental or social impacts simply be shifted elsewhere?

Session includes examples from: food sectors, construction, textiles, renewables (you can tailor the content, choose which examples to include, and decide whether to focus more on technology or the bigger picture).

The session moves beyond perfect circles on diagrams and explores circularity as it operates within real ecological, social and economic systems.

Good for: organisations, teams and students working with products, resources, supply chains, innovation or circular-economy initiatives.

You will leave with: practical circular-economy thinking tools, a broader understanding of circular strategies and prompts for identifying opportunities within your own context.

Take-home materials can include AI prompts designed to challenge sustainability thinking, helping users uncover assumptions, expand system boundaries, consider overlooked stakeholders and identify questions requiring further evidence rather than simply asking AI for “the sustainable” answer.
